You know you're in (northern) California when...

*You feel like singing "America the Beautiful....something something something...amber waves of grain...purple mountain majesty..." because there really are majestic purple mountains and the roadside plants are golden, waving in the breeze

*The sky is suspiciously white from the horizon up to the clouds (blue above the clouds)

*Lots of streets have stairs for sidewalks because the slant is so steep

*People frolicking in the ocean are all wearing full body wetsuits

*You can wander through Chinatown for a morning, picking up such necessary products as shark fins, ginger roots, sake sets, and shoes for approximately $2.99

*For a change from Chinatown, you can turn the corner and find yourself transplanted to Italy, sitting at a little cafe with some beatnik, enjoying your tiramisu and black coffee, and trying to eavesdrop on the mafia personnel sitting at the table next to you

*You can buy a tshirt at Saks 5th Ave. for only $300

*Wandering along the piers, you can find men that look like women, women that look like men, very very fancily dressed people, people dressed very casually, street break dancers, men who hide behind branches and take great joy in jumping out to scare passersby (the bush men), seals who fight each other and bark like the world is ending, ferry rides to Sausalito, artists, jewelry sellers, and some of the best clam chowder and sourdough bread around

*All you see for miles are vineyards

*You can hike among trees that are thousands of years old and about a billion times bigger around than you are

*And finally, when you are enchanted by beautiful, beautiful country as you drive down Highway 1, taking in the tree covered mountains and the cliffs, the ocean crashing against the rocks and surfers riding the waves onto white sand beaches, the sunshine
